DiskWarrior

Question

I am running Mac OS X 10.6.x (Snow Leopard). What is the compatibility of DiskWarrior?

Answer

DiskWarrior 4 version 4.2 was released simultaneously with Mac OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard) for complete compatibility with Snow Leopard. Among the new features in version 4.2 are enhanced and faster directory repairs.

Older versions of DiskWarrior 4 are not completely compatible with Mac OS X 10.6. DiskWarrior 4 versions 4.0-4.1.1 will successfully rebuild a disk that has Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard installed or a disk that has been attached to a computer running Snow Leopard.

However, some operating system functionality has changed within Snow Leopard itself. As such, there are some compatibility issues when running DiskWarrior 4 versions 4.0-4.1.1. Alsoft currently recommends that you do not run DiskWarrior 4 versions 4.0-4.1.1 on any drive that has started up in Snow Leopard or has been attached to a Mac that was started up in Snow Leopard.

Instead, you should avail yourself of the free update to DiskWarrior 4 version 4.2.

What you can expect when running DiskWarrior 4 versions 4.0-4.1.1 and rebuilding a Snow Leopard disk.

While not recommended (and discouraged), if you do run DiskWarrior 4 versions 4.0-4.1.1 on a Snow Leopard disk you might encounter some problems such as:

1) You may need to re-enable journaling on a Snow Leopard disk that has been rebuilt (repaired). To re-enable journaling, open Disk Utility, select the rebuilt disk and click the Enable Journaling icon at the top of the Disk Utility window. If this icon is disabled then the disk is already journaled or never supported journaling.

2) You cannot rebuild FileVaults or disk images while started up in Snow Leopard.

See this knowledge base article for information that applies only to version 4.0 and both Leopard and Snow Leopard.

To repeat, an updated version of DiskWarrior that has complete Snow Leopard compatibility is available as a free download for existing owners of DiskWarrior 4 versions 4.0-4.1.1.
